5 travel insurance tips you should definitely know before you travel!
Travel insurance tips? Why do you need it? And why do you even need travel insurance?
Let’s explain it to you here.
Why travel insurance tips?
We sometimes hear some people wondering why they have to take out travel insurance. But we can tell you that you really need this! Because if you imagine that you get very sick abroad and you have to be repatriated back home, then this cost (which is big!) is not in your regular insurance. And with travel insurance, yes. Or suppose that you can’t leave at your location because of a natural disaster or other (weather) conditions, then you have to rebook and then this costs can also add up enormously. This is also covered by most travel insurance policies. And so there are many other reasons to take out travel insurance. And because there are different types of travel insurance, we’ll give you our travel insurance tips to help you below. This way you make a better choice when you leave on a trip.
1. A revolving or short-term insurance
Everyone thinks this is an easy choice, but it’s not quite that. We know people who only go on holiday once a year and automatically take out short-term insurance. That’s not always so smart. Especially if you go on holiday for 3 weeks (or more). Then you’re much better off with comprehensive insurance. This will come out much cheaper for you.
For people who go on short holidays several times a year, it is also much better to take out a comprehensive insurance policy. You only pay one amount a year with only one commission. Because if you take out insurance every time, as with several short-term insurance policies, you end up paying more through the commission. In fact, it is best to only take out short-term insurance if you go on holiday for a maximum of two weeks and once a year.
2. World or European coverage
Our second tip from our insurance tips list is a tip that is often forgotten or not checked when taking out insurance. The answer may be obvious, and it is. You just have to check it properly in the insurance policy. You can be insured either for Europe or for the whole world. This is a big difference! You pay for insurance from all over the world a little more, but it is recommended if you like to travel far away. Please note that the countries of Morocco, Egypt, Asian Turkey, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Lebanon are countries covered by European coverage.
The activity of your trip also depends on what insurance you need. If you go skiing, then a regular travel insurance is not enough. Because in this insurance your skis and equipment are not insured. Or if you’re going to do other dangerous sports like rafting in the wild, you don’t have enough of a regular travel insurance. Also, people who go to study or work abroad are not covered enough with travel insurance and will have to take out a different type of insurance.
Saving on insurance is something we absolutely do not recommend. It can sometimes be 20 euros/person and on a family of 5 people for example that is a huge amount, but then you are also less and often insufficiently covered in most cases. If you have something for you on your trip, you’ll lose more money. So always check where this price difference comes from. Sometimes it can only be due to the premium and then it would be foolish not to go to the cheapest (travel) insurer.
5. Cancellation insurance
You must take out this insurance within 7 days of booking your trip. We definitely recommend this one! Because you never know what might happen. If you can’t travel for a certain reason, it’s nice to get a large amount of your trip back. It is definitely advisable when you book an expensive holiday very well in advance. For last-minutes this is less advisable. Usually cancellation insurance is not that expensive, so also not worth saving up.
