USA Week 1: San Diego is our first stop
It’s time. We’re in the great America!
This is the first time we have come here and we are trying to experience the American Dream here with our road trip. San Diego is our first stop in the USA after we get from Mexico.
Many say that this city still has many elements of Mexico. If that’s true, you can read here. Curious how we experience our first week in the USA? Find out here!
Checks in America
In Los Angeles, we’d rent a car to drive to San Diego.
This was the cheapest route. But far from being the simplest!
The flight to Dallas lasted a few hours. Once there we had three hours to transfer to our next flight to Los Angeles. So our first steps on American soil were in Dallas. Outside the airport, of course, we haven’t seen much of this city. We were a little worried about making this transition. We already heard that controls are very strict when you travel from Mexico to the USA. So we took into account that it could be a long time before we were admitted to the USA.
Of course, we had put our papers in order
in advance. This saves a lot of work and stress at the airport itself. If you already have these papers, you can apply for some kind of self-scan to scan your passport and get proof of admission into the country. After that, you’ll have to go by an inspector with this evidence. This will give you a stamp on your international passport, just like on arrival in other countries outside Europe.
After this check it was time to have our luggage checked. A police officer with a dog led the queue. The dog was probably there to intercept drugs. It all seems very intimidating, but if you have nothing to hide, you walk right through here.
For both checks we had a lot of nervesbeforehand. Just because it was so spectacularly done and said. Actually, there’s nothing about it, and we didn’t have to worry about this. Everything went amazingly smoothly.
Lost in Los Angeles
After a fairly long journey, we finally landed in Los Angeles. This wasn’t our first ‘real’ destination, as we were going to San Diego. We had rented a car to drive from Los Angeles airport to our sleeping place in Los Angeles. It was now 10 o’clock in the evening, we were both exhausted and wanted to go to sleep as soon as possible. Of course, something had to go wrong again.
Without the Internet, we could not download our documents from the rental car on our smartphone. Such a large airport and not even one place where there was free wifi. Not even a single place where you could pay on the internet… Frustrated, we immediately bought a telephone card at the airport. This cost us 60 euros! Finally internet? No, i’m not. It took us another hour to get the internet with this phone card. Quickly get to the car rental company.
Traffic in Los Angeles is anything but fast. If you thought our traffic jams were bad, you just shouldn’t come here. Finally arrived at the rental car,we had to ‘learn’ to drive this car first. All cars here are automatic and that takes some getting used to. After some bumbling in the parking lot of the car rental company we were finally able to leave for sleeping place. We’ve never slept so well.
Big City San Diego
The next day we arrived in San Diego after more than three hours of driving. This is next to Los Angeles one of the largest cities on the west coast of America. We chose to add this city to our road trip because there is so much beautiful to see. Most people who take a road trip across America may not stop in San Diego right away. However, this city is really worth visiting.
San Diego Zoo
So we went to the San Diego Zoo which has been awarded best zoo in the world according to Tripadvisor. And as far as we are concerned, that is absolutely true! Although Paira Daiza is also beautiful in Belgium, this zoo still comes to number onewith us. We make the distinction mainly in the type of animals. At the
San Diego Zoo
there are just a lot of impressive animals that you can hardly find all at once in one zoo. So you can do it here. You’ll find pandas, polar bears, tigers, leopards, hippos and so much more. And besides, you can also see them up close without these animals seeming to be affected. That too is a huge plus,we think.
San Diego Padres
As we mentioned before, on our road trip we want to experience the whole American Dream and that includes sport of course. If you’re in San Diego, you can’t look next to the giant baseball stadium. This stage is called Petco Park and is home to the
San Diego Padres,
a well-known team in the USA. The match we were watching confirmed what we already knew. The Padres of San Diego are top and so was this match and the whole experience! It was a brilliant and impressive day. This is where you get to know American culture well. With all the trim and counting!
Beautiful buildings in a Spanish jacket, is not something you immediately think you will find in America. And yet we found this to our great surprise in San Diego. Visiting Balboa Park was quite a discovery and reminded us of Mexico. You have countless cozy buildings where interesting museums and even a beautiful flower conservatory is located in it. This park also has a colourful zone where you can buy handmade works of art from different countries. Furthermore, this park has the largest carillon in the world. Very impressive!
For our next destination we return to the big city Los Angeles. Hopefully the journey there will be a little smoother. We are already looking forward to experiencing the ultimate California Dream. Keep following us via Facebook or Instagram
