7 Tips for Getting Cheaper on a Road Trip
Today we would like to give you 7 tips to go on a cheaper road trip. We are currently on a road trip in America and think it is important to be able to do this as cheaply as possible because such a trip is already expensive enough. Yet we also love comfort and don’t want to saveon everything. The trip itself must also be pleasantly experienced. These tips can be applied to anyone very easily and are useful for anyone who wants to save a little on their (future) road trip. Do you have plans to go on a road trip soon? Then you should definitely read these 7 tips!
It is important to plan your road trip in advance. It might be adventurous not to prepare anything and wait and see where you go, but usually this isn’t cheaper. If you’re planning a road trip, it’s best to map out your route in detail in advance. This way you can avoid certain places that cost (a lot) of money on your route. For example, these can be toll roads that cost you a lot of money. You can also avoid paying car parks. So your planning in advance can save you a lot of money when you’re on the go. Keep that in mind.
2 Car hire
When you rent a car and go on a road trip with it, it is best to only rent a car to drive from place to place. Many people rent a car for the full road trip, including trips within the same city or region, but that’s not really necessary. If you stay in the same place for a longer period of time, it is cheaper to get around by public transport or sometimes even by taxi for short distances. You will save not only on the cost of your rental car,but also on petrol and possibly paying car parks. And these costs can add up, especially in big cities. Definitely something to take into account!
3 Buy car
However, renting a car is not in all cases the cheapest solution to take a road trip. In some countries the cost of a car is so low that it is better to buy one (second-hand) than to rent one from a (Western) company. After your road trip, you can sell this car backfor almost the same purchase price in many cases , or at least for an almost equal amount. This means that the cost of your transport is very low and you are easily hit everywhere. This tip is especially a good option for long road trips. This is one of our favorite tips for going on a road trip cheaper..
A road trip is usually a slightly longer trip and therefore you can save some money on your overnight stay. The cost of your overnight stay can be high. We ourselves choose to book many of our places through AirBnB. This website lets you stay at people’s homes at very different prices. So you have very cheap places to stay, but also very luxurious and expensive places. For example, there is a place to stay on AirBnB for every budget. For those who still like more luxury and comfort, you can occasionally opt for a hotel. For example, we also book a luxurious hotel every so long to relax. However, it is still cheaper to book a hotel from time to time and mainly use it through AirBnB, than to book a hotel anytime, anywhere.
If you are planning to take a road trip in a hot country, it is a good option to buya cooler. This way you can save some extra money on food and drink. How do you do that? It’s best to buy food and drinks in a supermarket in advance for a few days. In the morning before departure you can make a packed lunch with some extra drinks and refreshments for the road. In a cooler, your food and drink will not only stay cooler for longer, but also to be better. In addition, you can put a bag of ice in your cooler. This way your food and drink will stay fresh for even longer and your wallet will not have to be picked up all day at (expensive) roadside restaurants!
If you go on a long-term road trip, it’s best to buy and bring your own GPS. Many car rental companies offer a GPS for an extra cost but buying one yourself remains the best and cheapest solution. You can also use a GPS in your daily life and it is no trouble to take it with you on a trip. Don’t forget to keep your (international) maps up-to-date!
7 Driving behaviour
Cheaper road trip is also possible with your driving behaviour. Changing veranderen your driving behaviour can therefore save money. How then? For example, by releasing your accelerator pedal faster at a red or orange light instead of pushing your brake violently just before the traffic light. As a result, you will consume less petrol, which will also cost you less money. Checking your tyre pressure before departure is always a good idea. The right tyre pressure can save you a lot of petrol. What you also take into account is that you drive at the same pace during your road trip. Aggressive driving requires more gasoline and it can also be detrimental to your car. It’s best to make a road trip in a quiet way.
