We went on the first sunny weekend of the year to the Westhoek in West Flanders for a nice weekend away. We discovered hidden pearls from our own small country and we would also like to show you how beautiful this region in Belgium is.
We start our weekend away in the rural Alveringem, near Veurne. This small municipality has everything you rust need to relax. In some places it is still really quiet and secluded and everywhere you look out on endless meadows. stil We stayed there in a beautiful Bed & Breakfast called Oud Moeshof, which we can recommend to everyone. They are very nice owners and the rooms are spacious and equipped with everything. The breakfast is phenomenal with different local products and the location is ideal. The entire B&B is stylishly decorated and puts you in a relaxed atmosphere. From here we discovered even more fine places of the Westhoek.
As mentioned earlier, our B&B was near Veurne. This city is located in the centre of the Westhoek and is characterized by cosiness and atmosphere. Veurne was created by a round castle to prevent incursions. This castle has partly remained and that is also the reason why the streets run circularly. Now you’ll find hugelybeautiful architecture here, for example their special churches and the Belfry, and some excellent restaurants.
West Coast in the West corner
The Westhoek is close to the coast, in particular the West Coast of Belgium. Seaside towns such as De Panne, Nieuwpoort, Westende and Koksijde are within easy reach. We went for a day trip to Nieuwpoort, about a fifteen-minute drive from our B&B. It was an ideal day with the first good rays of sunshine on our faces! Enjoy!
A weekend trip to the Westhoek is of course not complete without a visit to Ypres. This historically important city is the attraction of the Westhoek. Many foreign tourists descend to this city. Ypres is a beautiful city with a rich history and you can’t get around it when you’re there. We visited the In Flanders Fields Museum and were certainly impressed by this. It catapults you back into the days of war and also tells very personal stories. This means that real connoisseurs can learn something from this museum. It certainly leaves an impression.
Weekend getaway in the Westhoek
In short, the Westhoek has everything you need to give you a weekend in peace and quiet. A weekend you can enjoy. Nothing’s to be done. Have you become curious about the West corner of Belgium? Or do you prefer active city breaks? Let us know via the comments!
