Although cold destinations are not really our favourite destinations, we still went to beautiful Austria during wintertime. And we certainly did not regret it, because Austria is a phenomenal country with lush and wide nature. Although that is of course not the only reason to go there. In Austria you have some charming cities to visit. Just think of Innsbruck, Vienna and Salzburg. Reasons enough to go. If only for skiing, because we did that for the first time in our lives.
OUR TRAVELS TO AUSTRIA
Flight tickets from Belgium to Austria are actually not that expensive. You already fly to Vienna or Salzburg for an average of 55 euros per person. If you want to fly to Innsbruck or Graz, you can easily pay double. Most flights are with Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines which are both reliable airlines. Although we recommend to go on holiday to Austria by car. This is not only cheaper but also better for the environment. This gives you more freedom.
If you go to Austria by car (which we recommend), transport in Austria is of course not very difficult. The only thing you have to pay attention to is that you have snow chains with you. Because they are mandatory (in winter) in Austria. You also need to have a vignette in some areas such as Tyrol. Nowadays you can easily order this online and it costs on average 10 euros per 10 days. Furthermore, you have a very good train network in Austria, which in our opinion works perfectly. There are also some buses driving around, but these do not run regularly enough, except in the big cities, to really count on them.
Prices for an accommodation in Austria vary enormously from time to time. In a hotel that is located in the ski areas, you can easily pay 1200 euros per person for a week in winter. While this is only around 600 euros during summer time. But there are alternatives. You also have many ‘Gästehausen’. This is a kind of B&B and it is cheaper especially in these ski-areas. At a Gästehaus you pay an average of only 800 euros for a room for a week in high season. Airbnb is also an option, but the offer is not really extensive except for the big cities. However, the prices in these cities at Airbnb are interesting with an average price of 30 euros for a room.
