The Bahamas perfectly describes palm trees, a burning sun, beautiful clear water and pearly white beaches. It all brings this destination at the top of our bucket list. It always seemed impossible to go to the Bahamas as a European, but in fact it was not as difficult as we thought. Unfortunately, it is an expensive destination. Especially eating and drinking in the hotel will be a big part of your budget. Fortunately, there are some alternatives available.
OUR EXPERIENCES Bahamas
BEST TRAVEL TIME
You can travel to the Bahamas all year round. This because the temperature is always high, around 30 degrees, and rain season starting from May is quite okay. It often rains for a maximum of 1 hour per day. And it usually even stays dry during the day.
Unfortunately, there are currently no direct flights available from Belgium or the Netherlands to the Bahamas, except for one or two flights per year. You can reach this archipel via a transfer in America or London. The average price for a transfer ticket is an average of 400 euros for a one-way ticket. You often arrive in Nassau or George Town. These tickets are best found on the Skyscanner website. You can always leave from Cuba like us, because this is only 1 hour flying.
Undoubtedly one of the biggest costs in the Bahamas is your accommodation. The average price for a regular hotel room is therefore 250 euros for a night. Although you also have rooms from 80 euros. Airbnb is also not cheap in this region. You can easily pay 90 euros for a night. Which is quite a lot for Airbnb. The cheapest way to find a place to sleep in the Bahamas is a hostel. 45 euros is the starting price for an overnight stay. Nevertheless, we recommend to book a hotel in this idyllic place. It is part of the experience.
Most tourists travel by taxi in the Bahamas. However, this is not the cheapest way. You pay about 1 euro per minute. The only taxi you can hardly get out of is the one to and from the airport. Unfortunately, other transport is not suitable for large suitcases (with the exception of a rental car). Asking other people to share a taxi can lower the price.
RENT A CAR
You can also rent a car in the Bahamas. But this seems unnecessary to us because the islands are not that big and all activities are almost in the same neighborhood. If you decide to rent a car, you should know that you drive on the left. The price for renting a car starts at 62 euros for a day (insurance included).
A boat in the Bahamas is inevitable if you want to go from island to island. You will not always find this online. But don’t worry, you can ask in any marina how and with whom you can sail. Because a ferry is not available to every island. You will then have to sail with, for example, the mail boat. Prices are very variable and above all negotiable.
A bus is not available on every island in the Bahamas, but you can find it on an island like Nassau. You pay about 1,20 euros for a single ticket, which makes this the cheapest way of transport on the island.
WHAT TO DO IN THE Bahamas?
FOOD IN THE Bahamas
Food and drinks are perhaps the biggest cost in this country. In some tourist regions and hotels, you can easily pay 5 euros for a soft drink and 25 euros for a simple main course. Taxes and services not yet included. A relatively cheaper solution in the Bahamas is to eat locally and visit the supermarket. Although this is also still relatively expensive compared to prices in Europe. The cuisine in this country can be compared to American cuisine and that is mainly due to the many tourists from America. You can also find large numbers of fish and lobster here.
You do not need a visa for the Bahamas. Only your international passport. At the airport you have to fill in a migration document where you also have to show your flight tickets back home. Your hotel reservation may also be requested in some cases. It is therefore recommended to print them all in advance.
You should only have a Yellow Fever vaccine in the Bahamas if you are traveling from a country where the Yellow Fever is present. Or if you have been in one of these countries the past 7 days for a minimum of 12 hours. Other than this, no vaccine is required or recommended. Not even with a longer stay on these islands.
In the Bahamas you can pay with the local Bahamian Dollar as well as the US Dollar. These have exactly the same value. Although you can pay almost anywhere in the Bahamas with a credit card (no ordinary bank card) as well. In some hotels they only work with a room charge where you have to pay the bill afterwards. Something that can make you spend more money than you expect.
