Bulgaria 🇧🇬

Bulgaria may not have been the first country we thought of when choosing a new travel destination. But we are very happy that we eventually went there. Because in addition to the major cities such as Sofia and Varna, this country also has a beautiful coastline at the Black Sea. But above all, this country has beautiful nature, which is perhaps the greatest asset of Bulgaria. On top of that, it is really a budget-friendly destination within Europe.

For ideal weather conditions, you should be in Bulgaria from May to September. Although there is also a bit of luck involved. You can also experience bad weather in full summer. Do you want to avoid the more expensive and busier peak season? Then you should go to Bulgaria in May, June or September.

The cheapest way to fly to Bulgaria from Belgium is with a direct flight from Charleroi to Sofia with either Ryanair or Wizz Air. You pay around 110 euros for a return ticket in the summer months and even 40 euros out of season. Are you going to the coast? Then you better fly to Varna, because Sofia is a 4 hour drive from the coast. Flights to Varna are more expensive in the summer months with a price around 200 euros for a return ticket. Off season you can compare this in terms of price to Sofia. Of course you can always try to score a cheap ticket with these tips.

However, transport in Bulgaria is not a problem. You can get anywhere in this country. Either you use public transport that is relatively okay in most major cities such as Sofia. Or you can take the taxis that do not cost that much compared to what people pay here with us. Pay attention to which taxis you take in Bulgaria because there are also more expensive ones. It is therefore best to take the official OR taxis where the driver’s license is always visible in the taxi. There are many organizations that try to copy these taxis. With these organizations you suddenly have to pay in euros instead of in the local currency Leva and this is much more expensive.

Bulgaria is a country where you can spend a lot of money but can also easily do budget trips without having to sacrifice a lot. You can already find beautiful rooms at Airbnb for 15 euros per night and 30 euros for an entire apartment per night. But not only Airbnb is cheap, the hotels are also very good. You also have rooms of 150 euros for one night. But the cheapest room in a decent hotel starts at 35 euros per night (which often includes breakfast). Prices will of course be slightly higher at the coast than inland. In our opinion, hostel prices are higher compared to the rest of the world. Because in Bulgaria you pay an average of 20 euros per night for a hostel. We think you are better off with a hotel. We also recommend a hotel in Bulgaria in terms of hygiene.

The food in Bulgaria is quite healthy as many dishes consist entirely of vegetables. Although you can also eat a nice piece of meat or fish here. Some traditional dishes that you should try are the Shopska salad, Tarator, Purlenka and even (Turkish) Baklava. You will approximately spend between 15 and 20 euros per day per person. Do you cook yourself? Then you can halve this budget. Are you going to the more expensive restaurants? Then it will be higher. Bulgarians only eat one real meal a day and all kinds of snacks throughout the day. Fortunately, they are adapted to tourists.

Despite the fact that Bulgaria is located in Europe, you do not pay here with the euro, but with the Bulgarian Lev. This does not really have to be a problem because you can pay almost anywhere with your credit card. Nevertheless, it is recommended to have a little cash in your pocket. But this is also easy to pick up at an ATM.
