Morocco ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Morocco is a country that has been on our bucket list for a long time. Especially Marrakesh attracted us because of the beautiful architecture. Of course Morocco is more than just Marrakesh. You also have beautiful cities like Casablanca, Tangier and Fez. And a huge desert where you can make beautiful trips with, for example, a camel. Morocco is known for its delicious mint tea and accompanying sweet pastries. The delicious tagines can certainly charm us. It’s simply a country with so much to offer.

OUR EXPERIENCES

USEFUL FACTS for MOROCCO

BEST TRAVEL TIME

Morocco has different climates, so the perfect travel time strongly depends on which destination you want to visit. The inland, including Marrakesh, is best visited from September until May. You better explore the coast from April to November. Do you choose a holiday in the beautiful Atlas Mountains? Then you better go in the months of April and May or October and November. You can generally visit Morocco all year round with a few degrees temperature difference.

FLIGHT TICKETS

Flying to Morocco can be very cheap. For example, outside the high season you can book a ticket with Ryanair for 70 euros return to Marrakesh. But then you have to be patient and use the right tips. For the rest of the year, you have to charge an average of 370 euros at different companies. For example, you have a direct flight from Belgium to Marrakesh, Tangier, Casablanca, Agadir, Fez and Nador. These destinations are not available every day and some even every two weeks. Flying to Morocco can take between 3 and 5 hours depending on your destination.

ACCOMODATION

The most obvious accommodation in Morocco is a hotel or riad. However, prices for these hotels are not cheap in cities like Marrakesh due to mass tourism. So you pay an average of 140 euros per night for a room. Although you also have rooms of 50 euros per night or rooms that are a lot more expensive. For the other cities in Morocco, the price is on average around 75 euros for a room. But you will certainly find cheaper options. Using Airbnb you can already find prices from 30 euros for a room.

TRANSPORT

When you book an all-in hotel in Morocco, a shuttle is often included in the price. Not only to and from the airport, but also to the city center. If this is not the case, you can also take a taxi. These are very cheap and reliable in Morocco. All you have to do is haggle. That is unfortunately something you will have to do here more often. Buses are also available and the rides are not that expensive (around 50 cents), but we do not recommend them. These buses are often very uncomfortable and, above all, far too crowded. A good alternative for long distances is the train. The connection between the 4 cities of Fรจz, Meknรจs, Marrakesh and Rabat is in excellent condition and highly recommended.

Food MOROCCO

With a daily budget of around 25 euros per person, you should be okay in Morocco when it comes to food and drinks. If you only stay in tourist cities like Marrakesh, this budget may be a bit higher. If you spend a holiday in an all-in hotel, you will of course not have this cost. Moroccan cuisine is best known for its tagines and spiced dishes. Although we are especially a fan of the sweet pastries and the best mint tea in the world.

PAYMENT

In Morocco you pay with the Moroccan Dirham. You can pick up this Dirham in one of the banks or at the reception of your hotel. But this certainly does not apply in every hotel. You will need cash because there are more shops and restaurants where you cannot pay electronically. You can only pay with a credit card in your hotel, at shopping centers and in more expensive restaurants. When paying at the restaurant, also remember the 10 percent tip.

WHAT TO DO IN MOROCCO?

INTERNET IN MOROCCO

Although most hotels and hostels have an excellent Wi-Fi network, it is sometimes useful to also have 4G. Do remember your 4G will only work in the bigger cities. The range outside the cities is not developed. You can easily purchase a SIM card with 4G from one of the reliable providers (Maroc Telecom, Orange and Inwi). You pay an average of 100 Dirham (1 euro) per 1GB. Which we think is a very correct price. Buy this card in authorized shops and preferably not at the airport because the price is considerably higher there.

Souvenirs

If you go through the souks of Morocco you will notice that it is difficult not to buy souvenirs. Expect to negotiate the prices. That’s just part of it. Often half of the first amount given is the correct price. We came home with a lot of nice souvenirs.

documents

If you travel to Morocco as a European you do not need a visa or other documents. All you will need is an international passport. As you know this country is not in Europe so your regular ID is not valid here! The rule of an international passport was only introduced in 2015.
