Spain ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ

Spain is one of the most touristic destinations for a sunny holiday within Europe. This was also the very first destination for us as a couple. And that is not surprising since this country has so much to offer with beautiful cities such as Barcelona, โ€‹โ€‹Madrid, Seville and Valencia. On the other hand, Spain also has breathtaking islands such as Menorca, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and many more. In addition to these beautiful locations, you can also enjoy delicious food here. This makes us happy when we think of a delicious paella or a plate of tapas.

OUR EXPERIENCES

USEFUL FACTS about SPAIN

BEST TRAVEL TIME

The most ideal travel time to go to Spain is from June to September. Of course, this advice is only based on weather conditions. Do you want to avoid the crowds of most tourists? Then you better go in the months of May, June and September and maybe October. Although you will always find many tourists in cities such as Barcelona and Madrid. On islands like Gran Canaria you can also have a lovely winter sun during the cold winter months.

FLIGHT TICKETS

Nowadays, a plane ticket to Spain doesn’t have to cost that much anymore. For example, in the middle of the high season you will already find airline tickets of 40 euros per person for a single ticket. The cheapest destinations in Spain from Belgium and the Netherlands are Barcelona, โ€‹โ€‹Gerona, Valencia, Madrid, Zaragoza and Seville. A few airlines that offer flights are Rynair, Tui, Klm and Brussels Airlines. Although there are a few more companies that offer this. That is why Skyscanner is the ideal website to compare all these tickets.

AccomModation

In terms of accommodation, you can go as expensive in Spain as you want. You can stay in an all-in hotel and quickly pay 100 euros per night per person. But you can also stay in a standard hotel where you pay 40 euros per night. The price of a hotel room depends very much on the location and the season. For example, a hotel in the center of Barcelona will be much more expensive than a hotel in the suburbs. A cheaper alternative to a hotel is of course Airbnb, where you can find a room from 25 euros per night after a good search. Although this of course also depends on the location and the period.

Transport in Spain

Different rules apply to each city, but in general public transport is well organized in all tourist regions. Do you want to travel longer distances by public transport? Then you can always check websites as Trainline or Renfe for a train route. Or on the Movelia website that compares all the buses in Spain for you. The only disadvantage to this website is that it is only available in Spanish. The bus is the cheapest way to travel in Spain. So you pay an average of 9 euros per 100 km.

Food

With a budget of 25 to 30 euros per day per person, you should normally be OK in Spain. Although you can seriously downsize this budget if you decide to cook for yourself. This is only possible when you rent an apartment or Airbnb with a kitchen. Although we advise you to eat one of the delicious dishes in this country at a restaurant. For example, in Spain you should definitely have eaten paella, tapas, prawns, crema Catalana and certainly churros!

PayMENT

Spain is still in Europe, so you can also pay with euros. And with your credit card. Watch out! Some banks require you to activate the ‘pay abroad’ function. You can often do this yourself in the banking app, but it is best to check this before departure. In Spain it is not obligated to tip but it is common. For example, in many restaurants a tip between 5 and 10 percent is expected. For the man who brings your luggage to the room, a tip of 1 euro per suitcase is expected.

WHAT TO DO IN SPAIN?

DOCUMENTS AND VACCINES

Spain is also located in Europe, so you do not have to apply for additional documents as a European. Your passport is also valid here. The same applies to your driving license. This is also valid and is accepted by the local car rental companies. Are you going to Spain with the camper? Then it is best to take a copy of your insurance with you. Because this can be requested. You do not need any other vaccines compared to your home country.

PAID ROADS SPAIN

You have to pay for most highways in Spain. You can pay with cash, bank card or credit card at the toll gates for these roads. How much you have to pay depends on the road and the type of car you drive. The larger the car, the more you will have to pay. More about toll roads can be found here. Smaller highways and express roads are toll-free.

Internet

In most places in Spain you can use free wifi. You can find this in bars, restaurants, hotels and even in some museums. Unfortunately, this WiFi connection is not always of a good quality. Fortunately, roaming costs within Europe have been abolished for several years, so you can simply use your internet (4G) from home in Spain (coming from Europe).
