The most special gas stations in America
Who doesn’t dream of it? Taking a road trip through America. We ourselves dreamed of this for years and were happy when it became clear that we were finally going to do this. After weeks of planning, we thought that we had already found all the things we absolutely wanted to see. But now Sunnycars
comes up with a list of the most special gas stations in America. This will perhaps change our final road trip a little bit. Are you going to take a look at these unique places?
Historical Value
1 Teapot Gas Station, Washington
The teapot in Washington has been around since 1922 and we think it’s one of the best gas stations we’ve seen. It was designed by Jack Ainsworth as a reminder of the Teapot Dome Scandal (an oil scandal in Wyoming). Unfortunately, you can no longer get any fuel here. But for nice pictures to take this place seems to us definitely still suitable. We’ll write him down to our to-do list in Washington.
Address: 117 1 st Ave, Zillah, WA 98953
2 Airplane Service Station, Tennessee
In 1930, the Nickle brothers had come up with the idea of building as special a petrol station as possible to attract as many customers as possible. We think this worked out pretty well. Unfortunately, you can no longer get any fuel here and this is purely for the nice pictures and the history.
Address: 6829 Clinton Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37921
3 Shell Service Station, North Carolina
In the 1930s, shell built about 30 petrol stations in the shape of a shellas a result of a campaign. Unfortunately, these are almost all gone. There’s only one that’s really survived in the last few years, and that’s this one in North Carolina. We will also visit these within a few weeks because it is on our way through the USA.
Address: 1111 E Sprague St, Winston-Salem, NC 27107
Architectural value
1 Jack Colker Union 96 Gas Station in Beverly Hills
The roof of this beautiful gas station was not originally intended for the gas station. It was designed for the Los Angeles airport. After it became clear that they didn’t need this roof in the airport, it ended up being used as a gas station in Beverly Hills. And we don’t mind! The picture is absolutely right.
Address: 427 N Crescent Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210
2 Poshest Gas Station in Los Angeles
The‘gas station of the future’, as it is called, can be found in Los Angeles. And we don’t think it stole its name because it contains solar panels and it catches rainwater that can be reused. And we believe that this is the ideal future. Some also say that this gas station is reminiscent of the Walt Disney concert hall.
Address: 8770 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90035
3 Orbit Gas Station in Orange Vale
If you’re in Northern California, you should definitely pass here. You will find a special building with all the pointy corners. This petrol station is a nice example of the Googie architecture, which strange shapes were definitely a part of. In the 40s to 60s this was a very popular style. Now you don’t find much of it. So this gas station is.
