Making money while traveling – Our 11 tips
Making money while travelling is easier said than done and in many cases just unstarted work. In many places you can earn something more, but really earning enough to live on it is usually not the case. Unfortunately, this is only for a very small proportion of the people who are trying. However, we don’t want to discourage you too much because of course you can belong to that little part. Below we explain some good and less good methods to make money while traveling.
Making money while traveling
Let’s start with what we know most about, blogging. It’s true that there are bloggers who can liveon this , but this is a very small group worldwide, even though this doesn’t seem to be the case with all the well-known influencers today. If you want to make money from blogging, you have to put a lot of time into it and you also need a lot of patience. Because having a blog is not just making articles, it’s mostly a lot of work that you get – especially in the beginning – little in return. We especially like this and that’s why we keep doing it. Because other than sometimes cheaper travel or nice collaborations, this doesn’t really make us much money. So think of it mainly as a hobby that can grow into something beautiful, but not as income from the very beginning, because then you will be disappointed.
2 Seasonal work
You can also work effectively in the countries where you are staying. For example, in the summer you can work at a campsite in France or Italy. A nice website for this is camping guide. In winter you can work at ski resorts in the ski resorts. Or of course you can also work further afield, as on farms in, for example, Australia. A nice website that goes into this topic can be found here.
3 Webshop start
Starting a webshop is one of the only things that makes money while travelling is really possible. Only you need some patience for this until this source of income is large enough to live on. In the past, you needed a stock of your goods at a webshop, but nowadays you have dropshipping. What basically comes down to working with companies you pass on your order to, to which they send the order to your customers. You marches they smaller, but so does the risk and the work. You can work with companies that specialize in this, but you can also put on your naughty shoes and start negotiating with big brands of course. More information on this topic can be found here.
4 Offer your qualities
Don’t you feel like maintaining a webshop or all the paperwork that comes with it? Then you can also sell your qualities online. For example, are you an expert in social media? Then you can maintain the social mediachannels of companies for a fee. Or are you an expert in photoshop? Then, as an external force, you can be very valuable for some companies to do the design, for example. And so there are many more possibilities. Just think carefully about what your qualities are and what someone else might be with them. Try to sell yourself.
5 Travel photography
Travel photography is also a good way to make money while traveling. Of course, if you have the right equipment, because your photos must have the right number of pixels. And this equipment is usually quite an investment in itself! Of course, the equipment is not everything, your qualities as a photographer are perhaps the most important. Because the competition is great. But if you have talent and good material, then this is definitely a good way to make money. You can sell your photos on websites like Shutterstock.
6 Working on a plane or boat
Of course, you can always work as a steward(des) or pilot on a plane or as an aid on a cruise ship. But then you’re on your way more than you’re really on location. It’s not even an open secret that you don’t often come ashore as a help on a cruise ship. We don’t think this is really the best option, but it is possible.
7 Travel journalist
As a travel journalist, it goes without saying that you combine travel and work. This is obviously not so easy. For starters, a proper education will of course help you a long way. But that too is no guarantee. A blog can help you with that, because this is of course a very nice example of what you can do. No permanent job in this sector? Then you can also try it as a freelance writer for online magazines, for example. Making contacts in this world is very important!
8 Travel Guide
If you’ve been in a location a bit longer and you’re starting to know the place really well, you can also get started as a guide. You can join the local tourist services if they have a job for you, or you can already offer this yourself on Airbnb nowadays. When you’re really good at this, it can get you something ina short time. One step further is that you know the area so well that you will accompany group tours. This also has a nice reward and often you have a few nice friends left over. Djoser even regularly searches for people to do this.
9 Use language skills
Using your language skills to make money while traveling may not be the way that will get you the most, but it is one way. You can work as an interpreter at companies that need it or you can teach English at a school or privately at people’s homes. But you can also translate texts on websites like Fairlingo. Your English has to be of an academic level and the fees are often not that high compared to the time you put in.
As a good bartender, you get to work everywhere, especially if you’ve had an education for it. Your remuneration may not always be the same, but chances are you’ll get a nice tip. There are even courses that you can follow abroad, then you are already travelling during your education. Don’t feel like making cocktails, you might want to go looking in a hostel, where they often also seek help. The advantage there is that you usually have a shelter (free of charge).
11 Housesitting or au-pair
Housesitting may not always be paid for, but it can get you a free roof over your head while traveling. The principle is very simple. You look after the house, and sometimes the animals, of people who are themselves on vacation in exchange for free shelter. A nice website to get in touch with people looking for a housesitter is trustedhoussitters.com. You pay a one-time registration fee and after that everything is free. We travelled very cheaply throughout Americain this way. If you want shelter and earn a little more, you can look after children as an au-pair when the parents are too busy working. If you love kids, this might be the ideal way and tip in the list to make money while traveling. Please note that as an au-pair you usually don’t have much free time.
