USA Week 7: Lots of sightseeing in New York
is over. After three months of intensive travel through Mexico and America,we are ready for our last week. As sorry as this is to us, we were looking forward to this week. The
has been on our bucket list for a long time so we’ll close with a blast! We were in the giant New York for our 7th and final week. Are you enjoying our beautiful last week?
Compared to our previous flight,
this flight was a lot more pleasant. Little turbulence and time passed quickly. We were really looking forward to going to New York. This city has been on our bucket list forsome time. There’s so much to see and do. Everyone we heard talking about this city was very excited. Would we be? Everyone has a picture of this gigantic city and we were really looking forward to seeing if and how this image was going to change.
We stayed for this week at a giant AirBnB in Brooklyn,a 20 minute drive from Manhattan. Brooklyn itself is very beautiful. It’s a lot quieter than in Manhattan and rents are considerably lower. Still, you shouldn’t think this neighborhood is “less” than busy downtown New York. On the contrary, in Brooklyn there are beautiful villas and there is a lot of greenery to see. A very nice place to live and we definitely recommend this neighborhood to stay when you head to New York. Everything in Manhattan is also easily accessible by public transportfrom Brooklyn. We strongly advise against using a taxi as traffic in Manhattan is far-avoidable. Drivers are clapping, everyone is in a hurry and pedestrians are running in the road everywhere. We already got nerves at our taxi ride from the airport to our AirBnB. Taking
is much more pleasant!
Where the hustle and bustle of this city reaches its peak is without a doubt Times Square. This place is so chaotic and crowded that you can’t imagine it if you haven’t been there yet. Everyone wants to see and photograph the giant billboards and well-known chain stores. Consequently, of course no one can take a good picture and time to behold is not really there as you are dragged into the flowing mass. We chose to eat at a restaurant in Times Square so that, in a quieter way, we could watch the whole thing from a safe distance. We really enjoyed that!
Central Park, New
To escape all the hustle and bustle of the city, Central Park is the ideal base. Upon entering this huge park, there was still quite a lot of crowds, but once we walked deeper into the park it became ever quieter and quieter. In the middle of one of the largest cities in the world, you will find an oasis of peace here. It’s as if New York understands that you occasionally need to avoid the chaos and re-energe in the park. We can imagine that’s the case for many New Yorkers. We have traversed the whole park, walked for miles through the impressive nature and enjoyed all the beautiful views that Central Park has to offer. This is a really beautiful park and we would like to take it home to walk around daily.
Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn
New York is more than just the known center of Manhattan. As mentioned before, Brooklyn is also worth visiting. And maybe the other parts, like Queens and The Bronx,of New York, are too. If you want to have a beautiful view of Manhattan, then you should definitely go to the Brooklyn Bridge. Here you can enjoy one of the world’s most famous views of Manhattan. This image can be seen on all the postcards and souvenirs of New York. Keep in mind that it can be busy. Taking a nice picture isn’t that easy. In the end, we succeeded!
Statue of Liberty
After the most famous view of Manhattan, we continued to the most famous statue in the world: Statue of Liberty. To see this statue, you have to sail by boat over the water. We chose not to do this as we don’t find a statue so impressive. It would take a lot of precious time to get there. Time we’d rather spend on the rest of New York. We did see the statue in the distance on the water and we also saw it pop up in just about every souvenir shop in New York. And there are many of them.
New York is known for many things, but also especially for its impressive museums. From MoMa to the MET. There are so many to see but we chose The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the MET for short) and the 9/11 Museum because it appealed to us the most.
has long been on our wish list as every year it is the mecca for many famous faces at the MET gala. This gala, in which all the major celebrities are very artistically dressed, has only just passed and you can see that in the museum. There were very impressive exhibitions of
inspired by Christianity to see. Furthermore, this huge museum is the place for all art lovers. There are treasures from Ancient Egypt, but also contemporary and modern art. And a few big names including Monet, Ernst, Delvaux, etc. Something for everyone!
You can’t get around it. 9/11 is an event that New York has signed. There is a New York before and after these sad attacks. We only know New York after this terrible event and can rememberthis day a little bit. In recent years we have regularly watched documentaries about 9/11 because we were very interested. Arriving at Ground Zero, the place where the WTC towers used to be, we got goosebumps. It’s very surreal to be here and see these huge depths in the ground. We really can’t imagine what that day must have been like for New Yorkers.
museum of 9/11,
which has been open for several years, we wanted to visit. The entry fee is used for education on this day and assistance to the victims. This museum is mainly built underground, which makes the experience feel even more real and impressive. Here we saw pieces of the destroyed towers, equipment of the emergency services and so much more involved stuff from that day. The many testimonies of victims and emergency services of 9/11 were very catchy. It is really incomprehensible what took place that day. This makes you quiet.
Outside of these fantastic museums, we also happen to see some wonderful exhibits. Many artists want to break through in New York and conquer the world. That’s why there are plenty of exhibits throughout the city. Especially in Brooklyn, art is a common theme.
Fifth Avenue, New
Fifth Avenue is perhaps the most famous street in New York. This mile-long street runs throughout Manhattan and is known for its well-known shops. And you can shop there for sure! We planned a day of shopping and only saw a quarter of this street. Also the well-known church St. Patrick’s Cathedral is on 5th Avenue. Across the street from this church you can see Rockefeller Center with the world famous statues of Prometheus and Atlas. Apart from all these sights, there are plenty of other things to discover on Fifth Avenue. This street is definitely worth a visit!
Part of our stay in New York, was very special because of Memorial Day that we could experience. This day, Americans celebrate honoring their army and soldiers. All over New York, Marines and the like are walking around in gear to celebrate this day. They are known for drinking and partying on Memorial Day weekends. In most stores in America you also get 40 discount, which made our day of shopping even more fun!
Shows in New York
Broadway is the most famous place in the world to see impressive shows. We also looked for tickets for the many shows, but unfortunately everything was already sold out. Being there early is the message! Instead, we bought tickets to a burlesque show in downtown Manhattan. In the end it was a show with a little burlesque, sensual dancing, but especially with humor and acrobatics. A fun experience!
You notice, our last days in America were well stocked with all the great things New York has to offer! We were very impressed with this metropolis. It is a city that really has something to offer for everyone and we understand why everyone dreams of ever travelling here. New York has certainly lived up to our expectations!
