Weekend away in your own country – Sint-Truiden
Last weekend we were invited to get to know the beautiful Sint-Truiden a bit better. Admittedly, we had never been to this limburg city before. But we were curious, because the city is mainly known as a fruit region where you can also take very nice walks and bike rides. We wanted to see more of that!
To start our first day of the weekend, we rented e-bikes at Rayvoltbike in Sint-Truiden that allowed us to explore the area. Not a typical e-bike but a state-of-the-art, yet with retro look, e-cruzer was waiting for us. The design is similar to a Harley Davidson motorcycle but still it is an electric bike. It’s great not to have to pedal when it goes uphill. The biggest plus? There is absolutely no environmental pollution because it remains a bicycle, without exhaust gases. The bike’s battery can be charged and with a full charge you can drive about 100 kilometres. So much further than your daily bike ride.
Through the network of bicycle hubs, we explored the region with our rented e-bikes. It’s so quiet and peaceful. It’s great to spend a day cycling or walking. When you’re here, you’ll see how vast the region is. At ‘Look on Haspengouw‘ with among other things the vantage point panorama basin of Velm you have a breathtaking view over the region. A little further on you also have the vantage point Helsh(ea)ven. Actually it is a beautiful work of art of a wooden church, but you also have an incredibly beautiful view here. It is the ideal stop for a short break or picnic and to enjoy the sight of course.
For example, we went to the farm cafe Heirbaan 66 where you can taste delicious local wine made from grapes from a Belgian vineyard. Didn’t you know that Belgium also has vineyards? Neither do we! But the wine that Hoenshof and Jerom Winery make here is of excellent quality, durable and in the long run also residue-free. As a young entrepreneur Jeroen has a passion for wine making and he, together with his father, succeeds completely. We found their cherry wine to be the most special product as we had never drunk it before. But also from the white Chardonnay and red Acolon we brought home a few bottles. Highly recommended to make a stopover here! Also enjoy the artisanal ice cream that you will find at the front of the farm cafe.
Another delicious drink for which Sint-Truiden is known, other than wine, is beer. With two excellent breweries, Sint-Truiden is well known far beyond the national borders. Kerkom brewery treated us to a delicious beer. Cherries are a local product and we love fruity beer, the choice was made quickly. And it was a good choice!
At wilderen brewery , which has already been established in 1642, we were given a tour of the impressive building where large parts of the original building are still standing. A mix of old and new and that gives a lot of charm. In addition to the tour, we also tasted some local products. You can come here for tastings and guided tours but also for a delicious lunch. This brewery is best known for its Omerta rum and Wilderen beer. Definitely recommended!
Nice dining in Sint-Truiden
There is no shortage of good food in Sint-Truiden. We were pleasantly surprised at the dinner at Bistro 11 near the Grand Place. You can taste that these dishes are prepared with a lot of love and fresh products. We enjoyed mussels as a starter and wolffish as main course. Both to lick thumbs and fingers at! For dessert we got a delicious lady-blanche. If you like a fresh, decent and delicious meal, you should pass here.
For sunday lunch we drove to Gelinden, about five minutes’ drive from Sint-Truiden. Here you will find Aen Tafel run by two super friendly operators. Aen Tafel has a Belgian cuisine where you can enjoy a lunch or evening meal, but they also provide bread meals and takeaway dishes. And all with a good helping of passion and talent for cooking. And lots of love. They really do a perk for their customers. We felt hugely welcome here and highly recommended is their specialty of farm chicken and of course their artisanal ice cream. Definitely try!
Sint-Truiden also scores high points for atmosphere and cosiness. When we were there we couldn’t enjoy one but two festivals. Pit Festival is a paying festival in the city centre with several well-known Belgian artists and local talent. In addition, they also hold workshops of various arts in the Pit Academy. Nearby are the Academy Hall and Abbey Tower which are more than true to visit!
In addition to the Pit Festival, Haspengouw Sings also took place on The Grand Place on Saturday. Enjoying a terrace with live music to sing along to? Check! And dance until the late hours assured. The atmosphere was good!
Finally, we had a unique experience at Escaperoom Hooch on the Grand Place in Sint-Truiden. The friendly owner of this shop has transformed a few rooms above its wine and liqueur bar into escape room. The idea of an escape room is to bring a question, mystery or assignment to a successful conclusion together with friends within a certain time. With a few tips and just out of time, we managed to “escape” anyway. A fun new challenge for anyone who likes riddles or games. Extra interesting is the bar downstairs where you can go for a strong drink. Here they have everything you can imagine and much more! You will find a lot of exclusive drinks here that you can buy or you can order bottles through their webshop.
Hotel in Sint-Truiden
Finally we could sleep like a rose at Hof van Stayen. This farm that was transformed into a hotel is part of Hotel Stayen. The spacious rooms of the hotel are very modern yet with an authentic touch. The location is perfect. The hotel is easily accessible by car and the ideal base for a walking or cycling holiday, in combination with a city visit. The location on the Fruit Valley is the greatest asset in our opinion. Along with the extensive and fresh breakfast. That’s how we want to wake up every morning!
We can’t say enough how pleasantly surprised we were by the charm of Sint-Truiden. Not only is the city centre attractive and vibrant, but the nature around it is also breathtaking. It is the perfect base for a weekend cycling, hiking or just enjoying the surroundings and its local products. We’ll definitely be back!
