4 tips to get to know a country better on your trip

Today we give you 4 tips to get to know a country better during your trip. We often have the impression that people like to go on holiday, but don’t really know anything about this country, let alone get to know the culture. Just because most tourists don’t get outside the hotel zone and only do tourist activities. And that’s a shame, especially if you buy an expensive plane ticket to a country like Mexico, for example. There is so much more to see than just the tourist hotspot. Of course, everyone has to decide for themselves what they like and how they want to spend their holidays, but we’d like to share our opinion to inspireyou. Hence these tips for travelling in the future.

    1 Don’t book at a hotel

Granted, a hotel is easy and sure if it is all inclusive. We also enjoy this. But unfortunately, you’re not going to get to know much culture here. All these hotels are similar. Whether you book a hotel in France or Mexico, the food and culture are often the same. For a change, take an airbnb. You can then rent a room or studio from the locals themselves. And believe us, this is where you really get to know the habits of a country. And that’s enriching. We ourselves often do this (also in Mexico at the moment), and we hardly want to travel any differently. And often it’s even cheaper too! Let that be an extra motivation to give it a try.

2 Learn the language in advance

Learning a few words of the foreign language in advance is not only fun, but it also gives you the opportunity to get to know local people faster. We always do this ourselves and we experience that people are much more open to us when we try to speak their language. Even if this doesn’t always work out. We always say that every language you learn, a whole new world opens up for you. No time to learn anything in advance? Then you can always bring a language guide.

3 Go outside the tourist zone

Many people stay within the tourist zone and that’s a shame. Because that’s not where you really get to know a country. Often the food is not traditional and looks almost the same as any other tourist zone in the world. There are too many souvenir shops and vendors who want to sell you the best attraction for the best price. This can be fun for a few days, but if you really want to get to know a country better then it’s best to get out of this zone. Try dishes you don’t know yet, go shopping in a local shop, talk to strangers on the street… A whole new world will open up for you. We can promise you that.

    4 Do as the locals

The last tip to get to know a country better is one that we might like the most. Act like the locals. Take public transport as they do, for example. It saves you money and you see things you don’t see otherwise. Or go to the shops where they go. Often you find out things you didn’t know. Or do you see things you’ve never seen before? Try these things. In Mexico we tried almost all the strange pastries from the bakery, and it is already certain that we will miss them when we return home. Finally, you can ask the locals where they are going on a day off. Often these are the nicest places that no one else knows and where you can relax more.

What do you do to get to know a country better?

Hopefully you’ll benefit from these tips to get to know a country better. Or maybe you have other tips that you already apply yourself? We’d love to hear them in the comments or on Facebook.
