Travel can sometimes be expensive, which is why we’ll give you tips to save money on your trip. Last time we gave you tips on how best to save on your plane tickets. Unfortunately, this is usually the only thing people (want to) save on. And that’s a shame, because you can save on many other things during your trip. Hence this list of tips to save money on the trip. Let us know if you had any use for these tips.
1. Travel in cheaper areas
Maybe a tip you could think of yourself. But this tip is not applied much. However, this is the best way of saving. In particular, look for countries where prosperity is less good to bad. Think of the gems Cambodia, Laos and Nicaragua, where you can stay and travel very cheaply. And where nature is beautiful.
2. Travel slowly
If you travel more slowly, you may see fewer different things, but the things you see will be much more valuable. And you will understand the local customs and people better. The biggest advantage is that you can save money in this way. You will save so much on transportation, which is usually the biggest cost. But also think of the discount you get when you rent accommodation for a longer period of time or when you can buy a multi-day public transport card in a city.
3. Eat and drink locally
Our next tip to save money on travel is about food. Walk a few blocks away from the tourist spots you know and you’ll find the local restaurants. These are very often half cheaper and even better. And in our opinion, you really get to know a country. We ourselves love to discover the local dishes and find this perhaps the best tip. You can also cook yourselfif possible. This will save you even more.
4. Save on your stay
Many people book a hotel because this is just easy and fun to stay. But now tell yourself, how often do you actually sit in that beautiful room during your trip? Hopefully not that often. Nice alternatives to a hotel include hostels, Airbnb and housesitting. But you can also remodel a van or caravan like we did. This will cost you some money in the beginning but will ultimately save you a lot of money.
5. Save on transport
Public transport is not always the cheapest way to travel. In some cases, renting a car is a much cheaper way to get from A to B. And then you have the advantage of having the freedom to stop at fun locations along the way. Go on footfor distances within 5 km , who knows what you will encounter. Nowadays, you also have the App Uber that can make you save a lot on transportation. But we are actually against this because these people are severely underpaid and the local taxis are going bankrupt.
6. Free activities
Research the region you’re going to very closely. In France, for example, we visited a beautiful local market and it was completely free. Or when we were in Barcelona we discovered that there are many museums free on Sunday afternoons. The most beautiful moments in life are usually free. So go on an adventure yourself and don’t always follow those expensive tourist attractions.
7. Talk to the locals
The last tip is definitely an interest-rich tip. Talk to the locals. Talk to people and they’ll be only too happy to help you. The locals can give you tips of fun activities that are not so touristy, and therefore much cheaper. And usually even more fun because they really represent the country and the culture.
