What to do in Tuscany?

1 The Tower of Pisa

We start immediately with a well-known and very touristy place in Tuscany… Pisa. In this city you can of course visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Admittedly, maybe not always as nice by the many tourists who pose in a crazy way for a photo. But definitely something you must have seen when you’re around. The site where you can admire the tower and other beautiful buildings is completely free. If you want to be in one of the buildings on the tower, you have to pay an entrance of 18 euros per person (at the ticket office). Something that we think is a little expensive for what it is.

2 Drive along tuscany’s beautiful coast

What not many people know is that Tuscany also has a beautiful coastline. Driving along this coastline is one of the things you should definitely have done when visiting this region. You’ll definitely come across some beautiful spots along the way where you’ll want to stop. A nice stretch of road is the SS1 Aurelia, where you will encounter beautiful rock formations and violent waves. You can also have a drink here in some small cozy bars.

3 Citytrip in Siena

Maybe not as well known as Florence, but therefore no less beautiful. With its cosy streets and beautiful old churches, you can’t help but fall in love with Siena. Especially the Duomo de Siena is a beautiful building that you should definitely go and see. Or go for a nice meal in the gigantic and beautiful square Piazza del Campo. The only downside to this city in Tuscany is the massive presence of tourists and the finding of parking.

4 Thermal baths from Saturnia

One of the most unique places in Tuscany is undoubtedly Saturnia. These are natural thermal baths that have a constant temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. Something that does not take any human action, everything happens here in a natural way of its own. And besides that, this place is also breathtakingly beautiful. Highly recommended and especially because this place is (currently still) free. What of course also makes for many tourists, going early enough is the message. And especially if you want a unique photo.

5 Florence Visits

Something that should certainly not be missing from this thing to do in Tuscany is definitely a visit to the city of Florence. Because although this city is overrun by the many tourists you still have some nice places and especially buildings to go and see. So you should definitely pass the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore basilica. Or along the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge. If you like art, a visit to the Palazzo Uffizi should not be missed. You can find art by Leonardo Da Vinci and Botticelli here. The best way to visit this city is to park your car just outside the city and then take the Tramvia to the city centre. This tram will only cost you 1.2 euros and will save you a lot of stress.

6 Citytrip in Lucca

Another fun city trip in Tuscany is of course Lucca which is sometimes called the Tuscan pearl. This mainly because of the small cozy streets and markets. But also certainly because of its squares like the Piazza Anfiteatro. A beautiful little square that has been laid out by the remains of a demolished amphitheatre. Very special and definitely worth a visit. A trip to Lucca is perfect to combine with a trip to Pisa.

7 Wine route in Tuscany

Follow one of the many wine routes in Tuscany. You will not only taste delicious wine on this route but also drive through an impressive landscape. Along the way you will also find some (smaller) but pleasant towns. Definitely one of the things we recommend in this list of what to do in Tuscany. Especially the wine region in and around the region of Bolgheri is highly recommended. You can also see the typical Tuscan landscapes here.

8 Arezzo and Cortona

Maybe not our favorite of this list with what to do in Tuscany but definitely something you can go do. These two cities are slightly smaller than, for example, Florence and Siena, which also leads to less tourism. We ourselves find these places similar to other small villages in the region. But these cities are best known for the Oscar-winning film La Vita è Bella. Which makes it very special for some.

9 Islands Elba, Giannutri, Giglio, Pianosa and Montecristo

From Tuscany you can also visit one of the islands nearby with the absolute must see the island of Elba where Napoleon was still in exile. Which shouldn’t have been so bad, as this island has a beautiful nature and a wide range of beautiful beaches. Deep-sea diving is also very popular on this island. This island is easily accessible by ferry from the city of Livorno.

10 Montecatini Terme

In Tuscany you can also find the seaside resort for baths of Europe. You can find 9 baths in Montecatini, which is located in the Pestoia region. Each of these 9 baths has its own name. The baths are called Excelsior, Grocco, La Salute, Leopoldine, Regina, Redi, Tamerici, Tettuccio and Torretta. If you decide to visit these baths, we recommend that you book a hotel nearby.
